Celebration of Positive African American Culture - February 16, 2008

On February 17, ACoJ Fellowship Ministries (ACoJFM) hosted the first ever Black Heritage Festival in Altamonte Springs, FL. Spearheaded by long time community resident Bishop Dr. Preston Rolle, Sr., this celebration of positive American culture, holds the potential for change in an area historically associated with crime and drugs.

The goals of the cultural festival are:

To celebrate the positive contributions and culture of civil rights activists

To promote intergenerational relations (Seniors and youth working toward common goal)

To promote community awareness
-
To promote community pride and activism to eradicate crime and drugs
-
To incorporate opportunities for job fairs and health workshops
The
3 square mile area located between 17-92 and Ronald Reagan Blvd, is almost
hidden to most travelers in Seminole county. However, this weed and feed
community, local authorities report, is a concentrated source of crime and drugs
for the area.
In fact, it is dubiously noted as the area where Corey Erving, son of NBA great Julius Erving, often purchased drugs which may have been an indirect factor in his untimely as the victim of a car wreck in 1998.
But as time passes, the need for change does not. With the ACoJ Black Heritage Festival, ACoJFellowship Ministries introduced a seed of hope that has the potential to change the social and economic landscape of the community and its residents.
